Lexie Terms and Conditions

1. General

1.1 Lexie ("Service") is a learning tool provided by Interlinear Oy ("service provider") that converts text into learning materials. The Service includes:

Mobile application (iOS/Android)
Web service (lexielearn.com)

1.2 These terms define the conditions related to the use of the Service between the user ("user") and the service provider.

1.3 By using the Service, the user accepts these terms and agrees to comply with them.

2. Right of use

2.1 The service provider grants the user a limited, personal, non-transferable right to use the Service according to these terms.

2.2 The right of use is valid until further notice, and the service provider may revoke it if the user violates these terms.

3. Service use

3.1 The Service is intended for personal learning use only.

3.2 Using the Service requires:

For Mobile App:

A mobile device and internet connection
Camera access permissions
Device storage access permissions

For Web Service:

An internet connection and a web browser
A user account. Creating study sets on the web service requires signing in.

4. Paid products (Lexie Pro)

4.1 Products

Lexie offers paid products that provide unlimited access to study set creation and additional features. Current prices are shown at the time of purchase. Available products:

Monthly: billed monthly, auto-renews each month
Annual: billed yearly, auto-renews each year
Family Annual (iOS only): billed yearly, supports up to 6 family members
Semester Pass: a one-time purchase that gives access for 5 months from the date of purchase. The pass does not renew automatically.
Yearly Pass: a one-time purchase that gives access for 12 months from the date of purchase. The pass does not renew automatically.
Gift code: a code bought as a one-time purchase on the web service that gives access for one year from the moment it is redeemed.

4.2 Family Plan Requirements

The Family Annual plan is available exclusively on iOS and requires Apple's Family Sharing to be enabled. Family members must be part of your Apple Family Sharing group to access the subscription benefits. Lexie cannot provide support for Apple Family Sharing configuration; please refer to Apple's support documentation for setup assistance.

4.3 Purchases in the mobile app

Purchases are processed through the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)
Payment is charged to your App Store or Play Store account upon purchase confirmation
Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period
Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period
You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your device's App Store or Play Store settings
Refund requests are handled by Apple or Google according to their respective refund policies

4.4 Purchases on the web service

Purchases are processed by our payment partners RevenueCat and Stripe. Your payment details are not stored in Lexie's systems.
A subscription or pass bought on the web service is also available in the mobile app when you sign in with the same account.
Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled before the end of the current billing period
You can cancel your web subscription at any time in your account settings

4.5 Right of withdrawal for web purchases

You can cancel a purchase made on the web service within 14 days of the purchase date and get a full refund. To cancel, email elina@lexielearn.com.

4.6 Cancellation and refunds

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then. Apart from section 4.5, no refunds are provided for partial subscription periods. One-time purchases (passes and gift codes) do not renew and do not need to be cancelled. Refund requests for web purchases can be sent to elina@lexielearn.com.

4.7 Price Changes

We may change subscription prices with reasonable notice. Price changes apply to billing periods starting after the change takes effect.

5. User responsibility for content and copyright compliance

5.1 Complete user responsibility

You are solely and entirely responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to photograph, upload, and process any materials through Lexie. By using our service, you represent and warrant that for all content you process:

You own the copyright to the content, OR
You have explicit written permission from the copyright holder, OR
The content is in the public domain, OR
The content is available under an open license that permits your use, OR
Your use is permitted under an exception or limitation in applicable copyright law, such as private use for personal study or fair use

Important: Lexie cannot and does not determine whether your use of any particular content is acceptable under copyright law. We also cannot help you obtain permission to use copyrighted content. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have the right to use content before processing it with Lexie.

5.2 No pre-screening

Lexie does not and cannot review, monitor, or verify the copyright status of materials you choose to process. We provide neutral technology tools, and you make all decisions about what content to use.

5.3 Educational use requirement

You agree to use Lexie exclusively for legitimate personal study purposes or to support the studies of your immediate family members.

5.4 Prohibited activities

You may not use Lexie to:

Process copyrighted materials without proper rights or legal justification
Create materials for commercial distribution or sale
Systematically process large volumes of copyrighted content
Use the service in any way that could substitute for purchasing legitimate educational materials

5.5 Sharing

Study sets you create yourself cannot be shared with other users. Sharing is only available for Lexie's own courses, the rights to which belong to Interlinear Oy.

6. User responsibility and platform neutrality

6.1 Your sole responsibility

You acknowledge and agree that you are solely responsible for:

All content you choose to process with the application
Ensuring compliance with all applicable copyright laws and regulations
Any legal consequences arising from your use of copyrighted materials
The functionality of your device and internet connection
Understanding and respecting the rights of copyright holders

6.2 Platform neutrality

Lexie operates as a neutral technology platform that provides tools for content processing. We do not encourage, facilitate, or participate in copyright infringement. Our service can be used with any text content, and the choice of what to process and the legal responsibility for that choice remain entirely with you. Lexie cannot review, monitor, or make determinations about the copyright status of user content.

6.3 Prohibited behaviors

You agree not to:

Use the application for any commercial purposes or systematic content processing
Attempt to circumvent the application's technical limitations or security measures
Process content in violation of these terms or applicable law
Share study materials created from copyrighted content in any other way unless you have the right to do so

7. Lexie's role and technical limitations

7.1 Processing service only

Lexie provides neutral technology that processes user-submitted content to create educational materials such as quizzes, flashcards, and audio. We act solely as a service provider, not as a content curator or copyright compliance monitor.

7.2 Temporary data transmission

Lexie temporarily transmits user content to our AI technology partners (Google, Anthropic, OpenAI) solely for processing purposes. Under their API terms, our partners do not use this data to train their models, and data sharing is turned off in our accounts.

7.3 Content storage policies

Uploaded files: Files you send, such as photos, screenshots, or PDF files, are not stored after processing, except for the Image Occlusion feature on the web service (see below).

For Mobile App: Lexie does not permanently store, access, review, monitor, or redistribute your content. Once processing is complete, generated materials are delivered to your device and we retain no copies.

For Web Service: Study sets you create, including text recognized from your files or text you have written or pasted, are stored in your user account. Your study sets are available only to you and are kept until you delete them or your account.

Image Occlusion (web service): When you create an Image Occlusion exercise on the web service, the image you upload is stored on our server as part of the study set. The image is available only when signed in, and it is deleted when you delete the study set or your account.

7.4 No copyright monitoring

Lexie cannot and does not monitor user content for copyright compliance. We do not make determinations about the legality of your content choices.

8. Content processing and privacy

8.1 User content submitted to the Service:

For Mobile App:

Is primarily stored on the user's own device
Is temporarily processed via secure external AI services
Is transmitted using encryption protocols
Is not retained by our AI processing partners longer than necessary for service provision
Is not used to train AI models
Remains accessible only to the user

For Web Service:

Is temporarily processed via secure external AI services
Study sets are stored in the user's account in a database located in the EU
Is transmitted using encryption protocols
Remains accessible only to the user until the user deletes the study set or their account

8.2 The service provider collects only essential analytics data for Service operation and non-identifiable performance metrics for service improvement. The processing of personal data is described in more detail in our Privacy Policy.

9. Intellectual property rights

9.1 All intellectual property rights related to the Service belong to the service provider.

9.2 You retain all rights to content you lawfully own in electronic form.

9.3 Lexie-generated study materials are derived from your input content, and your rights and responsibilities regarding these materials depend entirely on your rights to the underlying source content.

10. Your legal and financial responsibility

10.1 Indemnification

You are liable for damage caused to Interlinear Oy by your breach of these terms or by your use of the Service with copyrighted material without the necessary rights. This may include reasonable legal costs arising from claims related to your content choices.

10.2 Acknowledgment of legal risk

You explicitly acknowledge that unauthorized use of copyrighted materials may subject you to:

Copyright infringement lawsuits
Significant financial damages and legal fees
Injunctive relief preventing further use
Criminal penalties in cases of willful infringement

11. Limitation of liability

11.1 The Service is provided "as is" without any warranties.

11.2 The service provider is not responsible for:

Uninterrupted or error-free operation of the Service
Preservation or accuracy of user content
Any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages
Legal consequences of user content choices
Copyright compliance or infringement issues

11.3 Maximum liability cap

For paid services: In no event shall Lexie's total liability exceed the amount you paid for the service in the 12 months preceding the claim.

For free services: Our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.

12. Copyright complaints and takedown procedures

12.1 Notice and takedown

Copyright holders who believe their rights have been infringed may submit a formal takedown notice to elina@lexielearn.com including:

Clear identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed
Description of the allegedly infringing material and its location in our service
Your complete contact information
A good faith statement that you believe the use is not authorized by the copyright owner
A statement that the information in your notice is accurate
Your physical or electronic signature

12.2 Investigation and response

We will promptly investigate legitimate complaints and take appropriate action within a reasonable timeframe, which may include removing content or terminating use of the service for violations.

12.3 Repeat infringer policy

Lexie is committed to protecting intellectual property rights.

We will terminate the accounts of users who repeatedly violate copyright or are the subject of multiple legitimate copyright complaints.

Posting content that violates intellectual property rights is a violation of these terms and may result in immediate termination of the service.

12.4 Cooperation with authorities

Lexie will cooperate fully with legal authorities in investigations of alleged copyright infringement or other illegal activity under applicable Finnish and EU law.

13. Study best practices and guidance

13.1 Recommended practices

We encourage users to:

Prioritize public domain and openly licensed educational materials
Understand the limits of copyright exceptions and apply them conservatively
Consider purchasing digital rights for frequently used commercial content
Limit processing to genuinely necessary portions of copyrighted works

13.2 Copyright awareness

Users are encouraged to learn about copyright law and the copyright exceptions that apply in their country.

14. Data security and technical measures

14.1 We protect users' data with appropriate technical and organizational measures while it is transmitted and processed.

14.2 No transmission of data over the internet is completely without risk, even though we follow good security practices.

14.3 If a data breach affects your personal data, we will notify you as required by data protection law.

15. Service changes and discontinuation

15.1 The service provider reserves the right to:

Modify these terms with appropriate notice
Update or change Service features
Discontinue the Service with reasonable notice to users

15.2 Material changes will be announced through the mobile app or our website, with continued use constituting acceptance of updated terms.

16. Applicable law and dispute resolution

16.1 These terms are governed by Finnish law.

16.2 Any disputes will first be addressed through good faith negotiations before pursuing formal legal proceedings.

16.3 Users consent to the jurisdiction of Finnish courts for any legal proceedings related to these terms. Consumers may also bring a dispute to the Finnish Consumer Disputes Board (Kuluttajariitalautakunta). Nothing in these terms limits the protection a consumer has under the mandatory consumer laws of their country of residence.
