How to work out the grade you need on your final

Three numbers decide it: your grade in the class right now, how much of the whole grade the final is worth, and the grade you want to finish with. The part of the class that is already done keeps its weight, and the final has to make up the difference.

Score needed on the final = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Say your current grade is 82%, the final is worth 30% and you want 85%. The rest of the class counts for 70%, so it gives you 82 × 0.7 = 57.4 points. You need 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 more points from the final, and 27.6 ÷ 0.3 = 92. You need 92% on the final.

Take the grade you want, subtract your current grade times the part of the class that is not the final, and divide by the weight of the final. With a current grade of 82%, a final worth 30% and a goal of 85%, that is (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3, so you need 92% on the final.
Put your passing line in as the grade you want. In most US classes a D starts at 60%, but some courses need a C (70%) to pass or to count toward your major. Check your syllabus, then enter that number.
As much as its weight. If the final is worth 20%, every 10 points you score on it moves your class grade by 2 points. A final worth 40% moves it by 4 points for every 10.
Turn both into percentages first. Your current grade is the points you have earned divided by the points possible so far. The weight of the final is the points the final is worth divided by the total points in the class.
Then the final alone cannot get you to that grade. The calculator shows the best grade you can still reach with a perfect final. Ask your teacher about extra credit or dropped scores, which some classes allow.
